Title: Float and Sink
Age: 2-3 Year old
Subject Area: PreScience
Length of time for activity: 6-9 minutes

The goal of this activity is to try an easy experiment and test your guess and also to learn what the words “float” and “sink” mean.

Materials Needed:
  • A container that holds water, such as the kitchen sink, bathtub, large pot, plastic container, or a kiddie pool
  • Miscellaneous items with some that will float and some that will sink in the water.

What to do:

  1. Look for objects around your home that would float or sink in water.
  2. Choose your water container to experiment in.
  3. Have your child look at the items and explain to them what float and sink means.
  4. Have your child choose something to try.
  5. After it has either floated or sunk, talk about what happened.
  6. Try several.
  7. After several times of trying, ask your child to make a guess on whether the next object will float on top of the water or sink to the bottom of the container. Test your child’s answer together.

In the Comment Post below, please share your child’s age and if they are a boy or girl. What objects did you use to float and sink?  Were there some that were harder than others? Please describe your activity and how it went.
