PreMath (1-2 Years Old)

Title: Matching Game
Age: 1-2 Year old
Subject Area: PreMath Knowledge Standard 1
Length of time for activity: 3-6 minutes

The goal of this activity is to help your child begin to observe the different characteristics of objects so as to pick those items which are alike.

Materials Needed:

  • Baggie
  • Pairs of objects from around the house (2 of each thing), for example:
    • Two toilet paper rolls
    • Two spools
    • Two pencils
    • Two plastic spoons

What to do:

  1. Look around your house and collect pairs of objects.
  2. Store pairs in a baggie so you are prepared ahead of time for the game.
  3. Sit down on the floor together and pour the bag of items out in front of the two of you.
  4. Pick one object and explain to your child what it is. Ask them to find the one that looks just like it.
  5. After you have matched all the pairs, have your child pick the first item and you pick the item that matches.

Option:  As your child gets older, this game can increase in difficulty just by changing the items you collect from around the house.
