PreMath (3-4 Years Old)

Title: Mixing Colors

Math Knowledge Standard: 1

Objective: The goal of this activity is to let them find out through fun exposure what happens when you mix two primary colors together to get a secondary color.

Materials needed:

  • Six Dixie Cups
  • Water
  • Three Food Coloring Containers: Red, Blue, Yellow

What to Do:

  • Fill three Dixie cups ½ full of water.
  • Put a few drops of food coloring in each cup so you have the three primary colors – one red, one blue, and one yellow. I make the yellow one extra dark, and the blue and red have fewer drops.
  • Show your child how to put a few drops in another empty Dixie cup. Add another one of the primary colors.
  • Discover what two primaries equal:
    • Red + Blue = Purple
    • Red + Yellow = Orange
    • Blue + Yellow = Green

Note: Purple, Orange, and Green are secondary colors.

In the Comment Post below, please share your child’s age and if they are a boy or girl. What colors did your child make? Describe what you did and how it went.
