PreMath (4-5 Years Old)

Title: Button Search
Age: 4-5 Year old
Subject Area: PreMath Knowledge Standard 1
Length of time for activity: 12-15 minutes

The goal of this activity is to distinguish the different characteristics of the buttons in the container.

Materials Needed:

  • Misc. assortment of buttons
  • Index Cards
  • Markers

What to do:

  1. Using several index cards, write different “tasks” to do on each. For example:
    • Sort into different colors
    • Buttons with four holes
    • Buttons with two holes
    • All white buttons
    • Your favorite buttons
    • The biggest ones
    • Big buttons with two holes
    • Ones with two colors
    • Which is the largest?
    • Which is the smallest?
  1. Choose some of the “obvious” buttons and make pattern task cards using those buttons. Have a two-pattern sequence that repeats itself. Have your child continue the pattern several times.
  2. On the pattern card you could have:
  3. Large button – Small button – Large button – Small button – What comes next?
