Title: Button Search
Age: 4-5 Year old
Subject Area: PreMath Knowledge Standard 1
Length of time for activity: 12-15 minutes
The goal of this activity is to distinguish the different characteristics of the buttons in the container.
Materials Needed:
- Misc. assortment of buttons
- Index Cards
- Markers
What to do:
- Using several index cards, write different “tasks” to do on each. For example:

- Sort into different colors
- Buttons with four holes
- Buttons with two holes
- All white buttons
- Your favorite buttons
- The biggest ones
- Big buttons with two holes
- Ones with two colors
- Which is the largest?
- Which is the smallest?
- Choose some of the “obvious” buttons and make pattern task cards using those buttons. Have a two-pattern sequence that repeats itself. Have your child continue the pattern several times.
- On the pattern card you could have:
- Large button – Small button – Large button – Small button – What comes next?
